It seems a long time ago that I made my first tentative step into makeup. When I was in my early years I recall being allowed to play with some of my mum’s makeup and as this was the 1980s, there was lots of bright blue eyeshadow and vivid purple lipstick. The decade was not subtle in the slightest! Whilst makeup was predominately for play and I was never allowed to wear it out of the house, I did start wearing nail polish from around the age of nine on a weekend, and since then, the addiction has never waned! Polish is still the one item I have numerous varieties of, and I can’t remember the last time I had completely bare nails!
Nail polish usually came from Boots Natural Collection, Rimmel or Collection 2000 and I vaguely remember purchasing several Barry M polishes as well. I also took my first tentative steps into lip products with a lipstick from Boots Natural Collection. Admittedly it was more of a balm / lipstick hybrid but it was the first step into becoming the lip product junkie that I am today!
As I grew more confident and entered my early teens, I started using mascara and lip gloss and Lancôme’s Juicy Tubes were some of my favourites. I’m not sure why I liked them so much at the time but I don’t think there was the variation and availability of gloss then that there is now, and their candy colours and fun scents had me hooked! I’m sure I still have a couple lurking at the bottom of my draw today.
Throughout University, lack of funds meant that I tended to stick to tried and trusted products, mostly due to lack of funds. Bourjois and Max Factor were two of the main brands I purchased from when I had a little extra cash (that wasn’t being spend on going out!) and in particular I grew fond of the Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara which I still rate very highly in my mascara stash.
Today, I have a mixture of higher end department store brands and high street / drugstore products in regular rotation. I have an unhealthy (and expensive!) love of Chanel products, but am equally excited when I find an excellent product at a great price – the Top Shop Cream Blushes and Carmex Moisture Plus Lip Shines are two of my favourite can’t-live-without items.
What was your first beauty purchase?
How did you get interested in makeup?
My very First beauty product after kids lip balm was one of those make-up kits w blush, eye shadows & lip sticks made for 5yr olds. I got into make-up because my mom & grandma are beauticians and my 2 aunts own a spa.

Lucky you with your Mom and Grandma owning a spa! Yes I remember those little kits, they always seemed to end up in a mess with me though as I just ended up mixing everything together. I like to think my application skills have much improved since then!
DeleteLove this post! I first got into make-up when I used to watch my nan put hers on - she loves Estee Lauder and looks very good for her age. I think my first purchase was a mascara from Miss Sporty xx
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Miss Sporty! I used to love their lipglosses too!

ReplyDeleteoooh I remember coloured mascara! I used to have some sparkly ones that I think I got from Miss Selfridge - I don't think they even sell makeup now!

I always had an obsession with lipgloss but honestly cant remember what was my first. I also had some of those huge palettes with lipstick, awful eyeshadow and blush! lol
ReplyDeleteMy first proper makeup item was a gloss pot from Clinique which came with a teeny tiny lip brush, I was probably around 12. Thats when it all started and I wasnt able to walk through debenhams without stopping at every counter, and practically shake with excitement.

I had one of those huge palettes with every colour under the sun in them too! I remember those glos pots, they were a fab introduction to gloss and lip products.

I think my very first make up purchase was from Avon, the color trend collection. I can't remember exactly what I bought but there was a few things including a concealer.
ReplyDeleteI seem to remember getting a Christmas gift before I ever purchased make up for myself, it was a Natural Collections set, eye shadows, blushers and lipgloss. I really loved the colours in it and have been trying to find the perfect dupes since, with no luck :-(

Those little sets were great for making us get the makeup bug weren't they. The Natural Collection was a great introduction to makeup, so much choice and fab prices!

I spent my pocket money on Collection 2000 and Rimmel! Nail varnishes were a favourite of mine too. My first expensive make up item was probably not until I was about 19 and I worked in Allders department store - loved having a staff discount to use on Clinique! Almost Make-Up was my first purchase there. x
